I use my stick blender for smoothies all the time, but I recently wanted something refreshing and light without yogurt. I'm not usually a very creative beverage-maker. Orange juice diluted with water is about as wild as things get around here, and that's just sad. Time for a change.
Anyway, I'm having a little love affair with kiwis right now, and they were especially well-suited to a mash-up with the blueberries in my freezer. A squeeze of honey, a shot of seltzer, 2 cubes of ice, and I was in business.
Feel free to share your favorite drink combos below, if you're so moved.
p.s. You may notice some changes in 5 Second Rule for a few days or so. I'll be a bit out of pocket, and my charming and provocative husband has assured that he can fill in without blowing the whole blog to bits. Time will tell, I suppose. It'll be clear from the blog title or opening line if he's writing.
Recipe for Kiwi Blueberry Fizz
Refreshing and light, and filled with antioxidants and vitamin C to boot, this comes together quickly and cures what ails you. (Assuming what ails you is thirst.)
Makes 1 ten-ounce drink
2 kiwis, peeled and roughly chopped (a half-moon piece reserved for garnish, if desired)
1/4 cup frozen wild blueberries
up to 1 tablespoon honey (or agave nectar), to taste
1/2 cup plain chilled seltzer
Puree all ingredients in a real blender, or use a stick blender as I did. Garnish with a kiwi half-moon.
